Sixth International Symposium
on Technology and the Mine Problem

May 9 - 13, 2004
Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA

The Sixth Monterey International Symposium on Technology and the Mine Problem is planned for May 9-13, 2004.  Approximately 75 papers have been submitted for presentation from government, industry, and academia.  These papers cover the full range of technology and technical research, contributing to major systems applications in mine technology, naval mine warfare, land mine warfare, humanitarian demining, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) site remediation. Approximately five of these papers will be selected for plenary presentation, based on technical merit and breadth of application.

A number of senior Department of Defense and military representatives will speak on technical challenges associated with operational requirements for major systems applications. These speakers include Admiral Walter Doran, USN (Commander, U. S. Pacific Fleet), Lt. General Edward Hanlon, USMC (Commanding General, Marine Corps Combat Development Command), and Dr. Fenner Milton (Director, U. S. Army Night Vision and Electronics Support Division – responsible for Army countermine programs).

This year’s agenda will feature two new parallel technical sessions on recent field experience (land and sea) in operational areas such as Afghanistan and Iraq plus developmental test experience.  A parallel technical session on MCM Systems Development for Ship to Objective Maneuver will showcase new promise for these efforts.  Additionally, there will be an experience tour of the nearby Fort Ord site UXO remediation terrain with expert tour guides (available for the first 20 applicants to sign up at an additional cost of $20 each for the bus).

The downtown Monterey Maritime Museum, as it was for the 5th Symposium, will be an extremely enjoyable site for the Monday evening reception.

Badges and photo IDs will be compared at entry to the Naval Postgraduate School. It is critical that participants register with the full name that appears on their photo ID.

Parallel technical sessions include the following:

  • Field Experience (Sea)

  • Field Experience (Land)

  • Environment (Sea)

  • Environment (Land)

  • Acoustic Sensors

  • Electro – Magnetic Sensors

  • Optical Sensors

  • Biological/Biomimic Sensor
